Synopsis

Edward Bloom has always been a teller of tall-tales about his oversized life as a young man, when his wanderlust led him on an unlikely journey from a small-town in Alabama, around the world, and back again. His mythic exploits dart from the delightful to the delirious as he weaves epic tales about giants, blizzards, a witch and conjoined-twin lounge singers. With his larger-than-life stories, Bloom charms almost everyone he encounters except for his estranged son Will. When his mother, Sandra, tries to reunite them, Will must learn how to separate fact from fiction as he comes to terms with his father’s great feats and great failings.

Trivia

Ewan McGregor was cast as Young Ed Bloom when producers noticed the striking similarity between him and pictures of a young Albert Finney, who plays Senior Ed Bloom.

When Edward Bloom arrives home from the Korean War in his dress uniform the patch on his shoulder shows that he was assigned to the 187th Airborne Regimental Combat Team, known as the Rakkasans.

The joke with the elephant defecating while Edward daydreams was unscripted. The filming crew found it hilarious, and quickly zoomed out to get the whole thing.

When young Edward Bloom is singing in the church and his voice breaks, that single note that we hear is actually Ewan McGregor singing.

The image of a skull can be seen on one of the fishing lures as it turns. This can be seen in the beginning of the movie as Ewan McGregor, as narrator, talks about how some fish cannot be caught.

Quotes

Edward Bloom: Sandra Templeton, I love you and I WILL marry you.

Edward Bloom: I just saw the woman I’m going to marry. I know it. But I lost her.
Amos Calloway: Oh, tough break. Well, most men have to get married *before* they lose their wives.
Edward Bloom: I’m gonna spend every day for the rest of my life looking for her. That, or die alone!
Amos Calloway: Damn, kid. Lemme guess. Real pretty? Reddish-blondish hair? Blue dress?
Edward Bloom: Yeah!
Amos Calloway: I know her uncle. Friends of the family.
Edward Bloom: Who is she? Where does she live?
Amos Calloway: Forget it kid, don’t waste your time. She’s out of your league.
Edward Bloom: What do you mean? You don’t even know me.
Amos Calloway: Sure I do! You were hot shit back in Hickville, but here in the real world, you got squat! You don’t have a plan, you don’t have a job, you don’t have anything except the clothes on your back.

Edward Bloom: Now I may not have much, but I have more determination then any man you’re ever likely to meet.

Karl: I don’t want to eat you. I just get so hungry. I’m just too big.
Edward Bloom: Has it ever occurred to you that maybe you’re not too big? That maybe this place is just too small?

Edward Bloom: You don’t know me but my name is Edward Bloom and I love you.

Sandra Bloom: You don’t even know me.
Edward Bloom: I have the rest of my life to find out.

Edward Bloom: There are some fish that cannot be caught. It’s not that they are faster or stronger than other fish, they’re just touched by something extra.
