At a ceremony Sunday (April 11) in Los Angeles, the GLAAD Media Awards — handed out by the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation — bestowed its award for outstanding limited-release film on the movie, a bawdy but heartfelt comedy about the true story of a Texas con man (Carrey) who will stop at nothing to be reunited with his former cellmate (McGregor).

The GLAAD awards are intended to “recognize and honor media for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community and the issues that affect their lives.” They also fund GLAAD’s work to “amplify stories of LGBT people and issues that build support for equality.”

In a format unique to GLAAD, the awards are handed out in three phases, during awards shows in New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco. The San Francisco awards are the only ones that have yet to be handed out this year. They will take place May 14 and will include the awards for Outstanding Film – Wide Release, Outstanding Documentary and Outstanding Spanish-Language Music Artist.

The film, about a married con man who falls for his male cellmate, was a hit at Sundance in 2009 and was slated for release in March of this year.

Now Ewan and Jim will hit the big screen on December 3, according to Deadline.

Dark comedy’s theatrical release has been pushed back from April 30 to July 30. Consolidated Pictures Group is distributing the film.

Despite its top star billing, “Phillip Morris” has been plagued with distribution distress since premiering at Sundance in 2009, largely because of the film’s challenging subject matter.

From “Bad Santa” scribes Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, “Phillip Morris” tells the story of a married con man (Carrey) who falls in love with his cellmate (McGregor). Pic is based on the life of con man/artist Steven Jay Russell.

“Phillip Morris” will open in a limited run, and begin expanding on Aug. 6.

At last, “I Love You Phillip Morris” has been released in the UK! I saw the film this evening, and I have to say, I absolutely loved it Ewan and Jim put in fantastic performances, and I am definitely going to see this film again!
